A federal high court in Abuja has set April 19 as the date to hear a lawsuit brought by Philip Shaibu, former deputy governor of Edo state, against the state house of assembly and others.

The presiding judge, Inyang Ekwo, scheduled the hearing after considering the arguments from the involved lawyers.

The suit, identified as FHC/ABJ/CS/405/24, was originally planned for Thursday but was postponed due to a public holiday.

Shaibu was impeached by the Edo state house of assembly on Monday following the adoption of a report from a seven-man investigative panel chaired by retired justice S. A. Omonuwa.

Filed on March 27, the lawsuit aims to halt Shaibu’s removal from office.

The inspector-general of police and the Department of State Services are named as the first and second respondents, respectively.

The lawsuit alleges that the impeachment process violated Shaibu’s fundamental right to a fair hearing and failed to serve him the impeachment notice personally, among other violations.

Shaibu seeks an order preventing further violations of his constitutional right to a fair hearing.
