FG Urges NLC, TUC to Halt Planned Nationwide Strike
The government argues that this proposed industrial action would violate an existing court injunction.

The Nigerian Federal Government has urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their plan for a nationwide indefinite strike, scheduled for October 3.
The government argues that this proposed industrial action would violate an existing court injunction.
The issues at the heart of the strike, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent rise in fuel prices, are already under consideration by the National Industrial Court.
The government withdrew a contempt proceeding against the unions because they expressed a willingness to engage in negotiations.
In a letter dated September 26, addressed to the legal representative of the unions, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), urged him to persuade his clients to abandon the planned strike.
The government emphasizes the importance of respecting court orders and maintaining law and order. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chief of Staff to the President, National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the State Security Services were all copied on this communication.
To provide context, the proposed strike comes in response to the government’s removal of fuel subsidies, which has caused economic hardship for many Nigerians.
