FG Reconstitutes Governing Councils of Public Tertiary Institutions

The federal government has approved the reconstitution of governing councils for public tertiary institutions.
Folasade Boriowo, the media head at the federal ministry of education, confirmed this to TheCable on Saturday.
In June 2023, the National Universities Commission (NUC) dissolved the councils of all federal universities based on a presidential directive.
This directive also impacted the governing boards of government-funded parastatals, agencies, and institutions in the education sector.
The decision halted administrative processes in public tertiary institutions, requiring universities, colleges of education, and federal polytechnics to seek ministerial approval for tasks previously managed by their governing boards or councils.
After 11 months of persistent advocacy from education stakeholders, the governing councils have been reconstituted.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was among the voices urging for reinstatement, citing that the lack of governing councils led to increased cases of “illegality and flagrant violation” of institutional autonomy in public universities.
