EPL: Aston Villa Dent Arsenal’s Title Hopes

Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations took a hit on Saturday as they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite dominating much of the game, Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, were pegged back by Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, as the former Arsenal boss once again disrupted the Gunners’ title charge.
Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 35th minute, connecting with a Leandro Trossard cross to put the home side ahead. Shortly after halftime, Kai Havertz doubled the lead with a first-time volley from another Trossard delivery, leaving Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez unable to keep it out.
However, Villa responded emphatically. Youri Tielemans sparked their comeback with a diving header from Lucas Digne’s pinpoint cross. The equalizer came soon after, with Ollie Watkins firing a superb volley from Matty Cash’s pass to level the match in the 68th minute.
Arsenal thought they had reclaimed the lead when Mikel Merino’s shot deflected in off Havertz, but VAR disallowed the goal for handball. The Gunners were forced to settle for a draw, extending their unbeaten run to 12 matches but leaving them six points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Liverpool strengthened their position at the summit of the table with a late 2-0 victory over Brentford. Darwin Nunez struck twice in added time to secure all three points, taking Liverpool to 50 points with a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal, who have 44 points from 22 matches.
Justin Kluivert’s hat trick powered Bournemouth to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, ending the Magpies’ nine-match unbeaten run. Fulham claimed a 2-0 win over Leicester City, while Crystal Palace secured a 2-0 triumph against West Ham United.
Unai Emery has now twice derailed Arsenal’s title ambitions at the Emirates. Last season, Villa’s 2-0 victory effectively ended Arsenal’s hopes of clinching the league, and Saturday’s draw adds another dent to the Gunners’ credentials.
With Bukayo Saka sidelined by injury, Martin Odegaard struggling for form, and Arsenal’s attackers misfiring, the road to the title looks increasingly challenging for Arteta’s side.
