Emefiele’s Naira Redesign Aimed to Disrupt 2023 Elections – Akpabio Alleges
Emefiele had announced the redesign of N200, N500, and N1,000 naira notes in October 2022, with a deadline for the swapping of old notes by January 31, 2023.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, of attempting to disrupt the 2023 elections through the introduction of redesigned Naira notes prior to the polls.
Emefiele had announced the redesign of N200, N500, and N1,000 naira notes in October 2022, with a deadline for the swapping of old notes by January 31, 2023.
While Emefiele’s intention was to transition to a cashless economy, it led to unintended hardships for citizens.
Akpabio, during the Senate’s screening of CBN governor nominee Olayemi Cardoso, indirectly questioned if Cardoso would follow a similar path as his predecessor and meddle in politics while holding the CBN governor position.
He raised concerns about the timing of the currency redesign, suggesting it was an attempt to sabotage the election.
