Emefiele Granted N2bn Bail Over Alleged Illegal Acquisition of Abuja Estate

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has granted former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, bail in the sum of N2 billion following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Emefiele, who is facing an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy and abuse of office over the alleged illegal acquisition of a 753-unit estate in Lokogoma, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Justice Yusuf Halilu, who presided over the case, ordered that Emefiele must produce two sureties who each own property valued at N2 billion within Aso Drive, Maitama, or Wuse 2, all within the court’s jurisdiction. He was also directed to deposit his travel documents with the court.
The judge ruled that Emefiele must meet all bail conditions on or before Wednesday next week or risk being remanded in custody.
Emefiele, already facing other criminal charges in separate courts, was represented by his lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, while the EFCC’s legal team was led by Rotimi Oyedepo.
