Days After Euro Loss, Gareth Southgate Resigns As England Manager
Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as England manager on Tuesday, just two days after their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
“It’s time for change and a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last match as England manager,” he stated.
Southgate took charge in 2016 when England was struggling. Under his leadership, the team reached three semi-finals and two finals in four tournaments.
Before Southgate’s tenure, England had only made it to three major tournament semi-finals and one final, winning the World Cup in 1966.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for and manage England,” said the 53-year-old. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.”
