The Guest Speaker, an Associate Professor from the Department of Finance, Faculty of Management Science, University of Ilorin, Dr. Rihanat Abdulkadir, while speaking on the theme, explained the need for female children to start preparing for the future at an early age.
She said, “Whatever you want to do in the future, start preparing now. Don’t expect that it is the responsibility of the government to protect your future, and don’t wait for society to advocate for your rights of the future–your future is your right, start securing it now.”
“Be confident that you can face the future full of possibilities, that future is your right but it is also your responsibility, your time is now to start working for that future.”
Speaking on the uses of technology, Dr. Rihanat said, “Technology can destroy your future aspirations and it can help you build a better future, the choice is yours. Technology will give you a very great power to shape your desired path, at an early age you can start making legal money with technology. But for those that want to use it negatively by wasting time on TikTok or Facebook your time is now to stop all of that.”
She conclusively advised the students to build a better future by setting goals, having a duly timetable, seeking vocational knowledge, and having laid out plans on how they want to achieve their goals. “Your time is now to take culture to a new level, as girls, your time is now to tell people that the Girl child does not belong to the kitchen,” Dr. Rihanat said.
The convener, Mrs Olubusayo Adenike Bello while speaking with our correspondent explained that the Centre for Women’s Rights and Social Development has been existing for about 6 years–addressing the issues that concern girls’ and women’s rights.
Mrs Bello described International Girl’s Day as a special day to discuss female rights and the possible available opportunity for them in society to build an independent future.
She therefore urged parents and guardians to give their female wards proper home and society training, stating that, “parents should be more conscious of female children because they are very weak, and easy to get molested especially from home so they need more protection to be useful for themselves.”
