Court Bars APC guber candidate from Bayelsa Governorship Race Due to Term Limit Issue
The court’s decision, delivered by Justice Donatus Okorowo, was based on Sylva’s prior service as governor for two terms, which would exceed the constitutional limit of two terms for governors.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that Timipre Sylva, the ex-Minister of State for Petroleum, is ineligible to be the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State.
The court’s decision, delivered by Justice Donatus Okorowo, was based on Sylva’s prior service as governor for two terms, which would exceed the constitutional limit of two terms for governors.
Justice Okorowo cited the Supreme Court’s precedent in the Marwa vs. Nyako case, emphasizing that the Constitution’s provisions on term limits should not be expanded.
This judgment stemmed from a suit filed by Demesuoyefa Kolomo, an APC member, marked as FHC/ABJ/CS/821/2023 on June 3.
