Court Acquits Former NBC DG Modibbo Kawu of N2.5bn Fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted Ishaq Kawu, former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), of fraud charges related to the digital switchover (DSO) project.
Kawu was initially arraigned in May 2019 on a 12-count charge alongside Dipo Onifade, Pinnacle Communications Limited, and its former chairman, Lucky Omoluwa. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had accused the defendants of misappropriating a N2.5 billion seed grant meant for the DSO project, alleging abuse of office, money laundering, and deception with intent to defraud the federal government.
The case, which had previously seen a no-case submission dismissed by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, was later refiled with a five-count charge in December 2020.
