Community begs Gov Abdulrazaq to fix Isale Asa river culvert, flood channels

Residents of Isale Asa community in OpoMalu, Ilorin South LG of Kwara state, have appealed to Gov Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to fix Isale Asa river culvert and construct adequate flood channels in order to control flood from taking over the community in the raining season.

The flood from Isale Asa river has destroyed houses and properties around Isale Asa community.

According to the community elders, the flood was a result of inadequate design of drainage channels, river culvert structures and blockage by debris brought by flood waters.

SHO PEN ONLINE’s correspondent who visited the area on Thursday 20th of April, gathered that Isale Asa river is a confluence where Aluko river and water flowing from Unity joins.

Speaking with our correspondent at the spot, the Magaji of Isale Asa community, Alhaji Ibrahim Salami who explained that the community has been witnessing flood problem annually since past 6 years, said that house and land owners in Isale Asa have resulted to hiring house to live due to the flood.

Similarly, Mallam Issa Ajao who is one of the community elders, said, “we have no other place to live, we have been living in this community for the past 70 years and this has never happened until when government attempted to build culvert at the river bank which they eventually neglected, so this has put us in great problem each time it rains.”

The community elders in their separate interviews called on Kwara state government under the leadership of Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to earnestly interfere and create solutions ahead raining season.
