Brazil Defeats Super Falcons 1-0 in Paris Olympics Group Opener

The Super Falcons of Nigeria faced a 1-0 defeat against Brazil in their first match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Gabi Nunes scored the decisive goal in the 37th minute, resulting in a disappointing loss for Nigeria in Bordeaux on Thursday.

Falcons’ head coach Randy Waldrum made the notable decision to leave Asisat Oshoala on the bench, instead choosing Chinwendu Ihezuo to lead the attack.

Without the presence of the former Barcelona Femeni striker, Nigeria’s offense struggled throughout most of the game.

A brief period of excellence for the team was driven by the determination of captain Rashidat Ajibade, whose agility and speed created opportunities for Nigeria.

One of Ajibade’s impressive runs resulted in a cross to Ihezuo, but the striker’s attempt was weak and directed straight at Brazil’s goalkeeper, Lorena.

Soon after, Christy Ucheibe forced another save from Lorena.

From that point on, Brazil dominated, with 38-year-old Marta showcasing her skill. The six-time World Footballer of the Year thought she had given Brazil the lead in the 36th minute, but her goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

However, there was no VAR intervention a few minutes later when a defensive lapse allowed Nunes to seize her opportunity, smashing the ball into the net off the post past Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The Falcons struggled to regain control of the game, and despite a late push, Brazil held on to secure the three points.
