Boniface returns to squad after months out with groin injury

Xabi Alonso, the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, announced that Victor Boniface is returning to the team’s matchday squad following a three-month absence due to a groin injury.
Boniface sustained the injury during training with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, forcing him to miss both club and international matches since then.
Alonso provided an update on Boniface’s recovery during a press conference ahead of the club’s German Cup semi-final against Fortuna Dusseldorf, stating that the striker has recovered well and participated in training sessions.
Although Boniface won’t play a full match against Fortuna Dusseldorf, Alonso expressed optimism about his return, emphasizing Boniface’s strong mentality and eagerness to get back on the field.
Before his injury, Boniface had an impressive record in the Bundesliga, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists, earning him the league’s Rookie of the Month award five times consecutively from September to January.
Bayer Leverkusen currently leads the Bundesliga by 13 points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, with seven games remaining in the season.
