Benin Republic Secures Historic Victory Over Super Eagles in World Cup Qualifier

In a historic victory, Benin Republic defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 on Monday, marking their first win over the Nigerian team. This result jeopardizes Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes.
With only three points from four qualifying matches, Nigeria’s chances of advancing to the next World Cup are dwindling. The Super Eagles entered the match needing a win following a recent draw against South Africa.
The game began positively for Nigeria, who took the lead 25 minutes in thanks to Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge, who scored neatly from inside the box.
However, Benin, coached by former Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr, equalized in the 37th minute through Jodei Dossou after a defensive mistake by Nigeria. The Cheetahs further deepened Nigeria’s woes with a goal from Steve Mounie just before halftime.
Monday’s defeat leaves Nigeria 5th in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
