Taiwo Awoniyi, Super Eagles striker, was on target on his English Premier League (EPL) debut as he led Nottingham Forest to a 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.
The bulky centre forward wrote himself into club history, scoring Forest’s first EPL goal in 23 years since suffering relegation in 1999.
Awoniyi’s goal came in the added minutes of the first half, as the 25-year-old found himself in the right place to bungle in Jesse Lingard’s ricochet shot, sending the crowd into frenzy mode.
The newly promoted club however had another hero in Dean Henderson, the goalkeeper on loan from Manchester United, who saved Declan Rice’s penalty as Forest held on to claim their first three points in the two weeks old EPL campaign.
Elsewhere, an entertaining and feisty London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs ended in a 2-2 stalemate at Stamford Bridge.
The match saw a repeated touchline clash between coaches Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte as Tottenham scored a last-gasp equaliser. Both coaches were dismissed following the final whistle.
In the match proper, Kalilou Koulibaly scored his first EPL goal to put Chelsea ahead in the first half before Tottenham equalised through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s deflected strike on 68 minutes. Reece James gave Chelsea a second lead but Harry Kane’s last-gasp header ensured the London rivals shared the spoils.
