Army debunks COAS’ death rumours

The Nigerian Army has refuted reports suggesting that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has passed away.
The rumors, which began circulating on social media, originated from a post by a Nigerian journalist who claimed that Lagbaja died of cancer 48 hours ago in an undisclosed overseas hospital. The post also alleged that the news was being withheld due to internal lobbying for the Army Chief’s position.
In a response on X, the Nigerian Army dismissed the claims as false. However, sources within Army Headquarters confirmed that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is currently critically ill and has traveled abroad for medical treatment.
“The COAS is not dead. He is critically ill and needs our prayers at this time,” one source stated. Another source added, “He is undergoing treatment overseas. There is no confirmation of his death.”
Efforts to reach the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, for comments were unsuccessful, as his phone was unreachable and he had not responded to inquiries.
