Amaechi Criticizes Nigerians’ Silence Over Economic Hardship

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed disappointment in Nigerians for their apparent passive response to the economic challenges facing the country.

The former Rivers State governor lamented the rising cost of living, including the surge in fuel prices and escalating food inflation. He criticized the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s “reforms,” which he said have severely weakened the purchasing power of millions of Nigerians.

In an interview with ABN TV, Amaechi revealed that even he is struggling to afford diesel due to the ongoing economic hardship. He further expressed frustration that Nigerians allowed politicians to conduct election campaigns amidst such economic difficulties.

“I’m frustrated with the citizens. I’ve said it many times. You see a group of people stealing your money, making you poorer, and yet you can’t buy fuel or anything,” he said.

“The people should be angry. There should be protests—not necessarily against anyone specific, but against politicians, saying, ‘We won’t vote.’

“That’s the message people should be sending. With the current level of hunger… if people like us can’t afford diesel, imagine what’s happening to those without children like us.

“Someone remarked that this government’s achievement is that it has made Nigerians stronger because now they trek more.”

Amaechi served as Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022 under President Muhammadu Buhari and was governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015.
