AFCON Qualifier: Nigeria’s Winning Streak Halted by Stubborn Rwanda

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Rwanda in their second match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Despite dominating much of the game, the Eagles could not find the breakthrough as Rwanda’s disciplined defense stood firm.

Expectations were high following Nigeria’s convincing 3-0 victory over Benin Republic last Saturday, with many anticipating another win to maintain a 100 percent record in the qualifiers. However, the Rwandan side, inspired by the presence of President Paul Kagame, proved to be a tough nut to crack.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen made only one change from the last game, bringing Fisayo Dele-Bashiru into the starting lineup in place of Alex Iwobi, while Victor Osimhen started on the bench once again. Nigeria quickly took control of the game, with Ademola Lookman leading the charge and causing problems for the Amavubi defense.

Lookman thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 22nd minute, but his effort was ruled offside—a decision that sparked disagreement among Nigerian fans. Earlier, Victor Boniface rattled the post, with the Eagles unable to capitalize on the rebound.

As the first half ended in a stalemate, Eguavoen introduced Osimhen and Moses Simon, the duo that combined to score Nigeria’s second goal against Benin. However, Rwanda’s resolute defense, buoyed by their president’s presence, continued to frustrate the Eagles’ attacking efforts.

Despite Nigeria’s relentless pressure in the closing stages, they failed to break the deadlock, dropping two valuable points. Nevertheless, the Super Eagles remain at the top of the group with four points, while Rwanda sits second with two points.

Nigeria will look to bounce back and return to winning ways when they host Libya in their next match in October.
