A founding member of ruloing All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has urged the party and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to adopt the zoning convention of the Fourth Republic to preserve the unity of the country.
Addressing reporters yesterday in Abuja, Okechukwu hailed the PDP for the timely clarification of its stand on zoning the 2023 Presidency.
He said the two leading parties are key to the preservation of the country’s unity.
Okechukwu, who is also the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), noted that supporting a President from the Southeast would be APC’s and President Muhammadu Buhari’s greatest legacy to the socio-political stability and development of Nigeria.
Also, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba refuted the comments allegedly made by former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and ex-Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode at different fora that the party had zoned its presidential ticket to the North, preferably in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
Welcoming the PDP’s position on the zoning of its presidential ticket, Okechukwu maintained that “the two dominant political parties in our multiparty system, APC and PDP, hold the key to the restoration of Nigeria’s unity by observing the zoning convention. It was that same zoning convention that midwifed our Fourth Republic and we are waiting for the two to save our fledgling democracy.
